"Nana" is an ambiguous French term for a modern, self-confident, erotic, and wicked woman. With the phrase "All power to the Nanas!" Niki de Saint Phalle anticipated the ideas of the feminist movement in the mid-1960s. Her oversized female sculptures were first exhibited in Paris in October 1965. The life-affirming, joyful, colorful, mostly dancing, often larger-than-life, plump "Nanas" recur throughout her subsequent work.
