Untitled, Tokyo Metro is a signed and numbered gelatin silver photograph by celebrated Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama. Depicting the urban environment of Tokyo’s metro system, the photograph reflects Moriyama’s distinctive approach to the city: grainy black-and-white imagery, high contrast, unconventional framing, and an immediate sense of movement and anonymity. This example is number 11 from a limited edition of 40, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. The print measures 27 × 34 cm / 10.6 × 13.4 in and is presented in a 31 × 37 cm / 12.2 × 14.6 in frame.

Edition: Number 11/40 from a limited edition of 40, hand-signed and numbered by Daido Moriyama.

Untitled, Tokyo Metro is a limited-edition gelatin silver photograph by Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama, one of the most influential figures in postwar and contemporary street photography.

The photograph depicts the urban environment of the Tokyo metro and belongs conceptually to Moriyama’s extensive photographic exploration of Tokyo. Throughout his career, Moriyama has used the streets, stations, crowds, signage, vehicles, and transitional spaces of the Japanese capital as raw material for a highly personal vision of modern urban life.

This example is produced as a traditional gelatin silver print, measuring 27 × 34 cm / 10.6 × 13.4 in, and is presented framed at 31 × 37 cm / 12.2 × 14.6 in. It is hand-signed and numbered 11/40, from a limited edition of only 40 examples.

Moriyama’s Tokyo photographs are characterized by the visual qualities for which he became internationally recognized: strong grain, deep blacks, blurred movement, tilted compositions, harsh contrasts, and seemingly spontaneous viewpoints. Rather than presenting the city as a clean architectural environment, he records fleeting impressions—the visual fragments encountered while moving through streets, stations, tunnels, and public spaces.

Tokyo museum collections preserve a substantial group of Moriyama photographs under the series title Tokyo, including images of Shibuya terminals, Shinjuku alleys, Ikebukuro public spaces, Kichijoji streets, and other urban environments. Many are gelatin silver prints measuring approximately 23.4 × 34.3 cm, demonstrating the importance of this compact horizontal format within his Tokyo photography.

Moriyama’s approach was strongly influenced by the rapid transformation of postwar Japan as well as by photographers such as William Klein. His deliberately rough photographic language rejected conventional technical perfection in favor of immediacy, fragmentation, and psychological intensity. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes his work as embodying a dynamic, on-the-run approach to documenting life in postwar Japan.
