Zapping SLZ104 by Nam June Paik for Swatch is a limited-edition Musicall Art Special released in 1996. Designed by one of the most influential figures in video art, the watch transforms Paik’s fascination with television, electronic communication, broadcast culture, and rapidly moving information into a wearable design object.
The watch has a plastic case measuring approximately 33–34 mm / 1.3–1.34 in in diameter and is powered by a quartz Musicall movement. It was originally rated to 3 bar / 30 m water resistance. The translucent neon-green case surrounds a deep blue dial with white graphic elements, while the glossy plastic strap is covered with colorful fragments of television and information-age imagery.
The model was issued in a limited and individually numbered edition of 30,000 examples. Documented watches carry edition numbers such as 13,267/30,000 and 1,094/30,000, confirming the numbered production.
The original presentation packaging is an essential part of the concept. Zapping was supplied in a special case designed to resemble a television remote control, housed within additional outer packaging. This directly connects the object to Paik’s lifelong exploration of television, video, mass communication, and electronic culture.
Nam June Paik is widely regarded as a foundational figure in video art. Swatch’s own art archive describes Zapping as an information-age timepiece charged with the energy and electronic character of the 1990s.
A strong vintage collectible for admirers of Nam June Paik, Swatch Art Specials, video art, Musicall watches, 1990s design, limited editions, media art, and complete original artist presentation sets.
