The Sam Francis GZ123 is one of the landmark artist collaborations from Swatch’s early Art Special program. Released in 1992, the watch was designed by American painter Sam Francis, whose work is celebrated for its energetic use of color, spontaneous mark-making, and associations with Abstract Expressionism.
Swatch’s official history describes the collaboration as an “action-packed painting in watch form,” with the design appearing as though it had been painted directly onto the wrist. The dial and strap are covered with overlapping areas of vivid color, translating Francis’s expressive painting language into the compact format of a Gent wristwatch.
The model carries reference GZ123 and was produced in a limited edition of 49,999 individually numbered examples. Auction records document edition numbers printed on the case back, while the reverse of the strap carries a facsimile of Sam Francis’s signature.
The watch uses Swatch’s classic Gent construction with a plastic case, plastic crystal, printed plastic strap, and Swiss quartz movement. The case measures approximately 34 mm / 1.34 in in diameter. As with other vintage Swatch models from the period, its original water-resistance specification should be treated as historical rather than guaranteed today.
The special-pack version, identified as GZ123PACK, was supplied in dedicated artist packaging. Complete examples retaining the original presentation box and papers are especially attractive to collectors, and dealer records show boxed examples commanding noticeably stronger prices than loose watches.
Sam Francis was one of the major American painters associated with postwar abstraction, and his Swatch translates his characteristic interest in color, movement, and spatial openness into a wearable design object. The collaboration occupies an important place in Swatch’s history of working directly with internationally recognized contemporary artists.
A strong vintage collectible for admirers of Sam Francis, Swatch Art Specials, Abstract Expressionism, 1990s design, limited-edition watches, and artist-designed wearable objects.
