Für seine Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Reykjavik im Jahr 2009 präsentierte Nara seine Werke in den hölzernen Transportkisten, in denen sie zum Museum transportiert worden waren. An den Außenseiten der Kisten hingen Bilder, und in ihren inneren Nischen versteckten sich Figuren.

Dieses wunderschön gestaltete Pappbilderbuch greift die Themen der Show, nämlich Eindämmung und Transport, auf und führt sie fort: Es verfügt über Fenster, die geöffnet werden können, um den Blick auf die jugendlichen Figuren freizugeben, die in ihren Gefängnissen eingeschlossen sind und darauf warten, durch die Beteiligung des Lesers befreit zu werden.

Yoshitomo Nara + YNG: The Crated Rooms in Iceland is a 2014 publication connected to Nara’s installation at Reykjavík Art Museum. The project was created in collaboration with YNG and Hideki Toyoshima, one of the founders of the design collective graf, and transformed the practical materials of transport into an immersive exhibition environment. 

Inside, the book documents the installation made from wooden shipping crates and billboards, placing Nara’s iconic images in a raw and unexpected setting. Within the crates, visitors encountered paintings, drawings, and sculptures by Nara, turning the exhibition into a temporary world of travel, storage, memory, and discovery. This title is a strong collector’s book for fans of Yoshitomo Nara’s expressive figures, Japanese contemporary art, installation-based exhibitions, and rare artist publications.
